ACRONYMS

An acronym is a word formed by combining the initial letters of a multipart name, such as NATO from North Atlantic Treaty Organization or by combining the initial letters or parts of a series of words, such as radar from radio detecting and ranging. Acronyms are not limited to English; the Russian acronym SMERSH is a contraction of SMERt SHpionam, “Death To Spies.”

ACRONYM organizations have been a staple of spy fiction for 70 years, and an integral part of comic book storytelling for 50 or more.

An ACRONYM organization ideally will have a name that is redolent with implied meaning and a full explanation for the initials that still makes sense.

Alternatively in a more camp or humorous game, no matter how murderous, unfunny or scary an organization might be, it could still have a silly or baffling acronym.

Below is a list of ACRONYM organizations and their basic explanation. Each of them also has a listed Wealth. This rates the apparent Wealth useable by a member or agent of the organization when carrying out tasks for the agency or group. In other words for an agency related task the character can roll on the group’s Wealth and not their own.

ANSWER
Academic Network for Scientific Worldwide Environmental Research
ANSWER is a Non-Government Organization (NGO) reporting to the UN committe on climate change. Their remit is to study significant "Earth Changes" currently taking place and the many anomalies linked to them. This includes the sudden upsurge in Kaiju attacks, various gigantic underwater menaces picked up on sonar, the disappearance of spacecraft, aircraft and submarines, and the growing numbers of spontaneous Mutant Pariah births in human populations. ANSWER is a group of specialist scientists, science heroes, billionaires and Refuge leaders who have banded together to try and investigate what is going on, and, if it is as bad as they fear, to try and prepare humanity for a shift into what could be an era of Extinction Level threats.

BELIEF
Bureau of Education, Librarianship, Investigation and Ecumenical Faith
BELIEF is a secret federal agency dedicated to investigating, cataloguing, understanding and teaching about extreme possibilities. Although secular, they investigate and have tolerance for the belief in all forms of religious, spiritual, paranormal and superstitious belief, dutifully investigating and recording everything from rains of frogs and inscribed pick ax handles to religious miracles, faith healers, cryptids, UFO experiences, life after death reports, missing time incidents, Elvis sightings and ghosts. The BELIEF Headquarters is a nondescript office building most of the interior of which is a multi-level open plan library across ten storeys. Many of the storeys contain empty shelves since there is still so much to investigate and record. All BELIEF cases are given a BELIEF identifier code beginning with the letter B-.

Interpen
Intercontinental Penetration Force
Interpen has had two incarnations. The original, set up by Gerry Hemming assisted by Frank Fiorini aka Frank Sturgis, both of them CIA informants and “mechanics” (hired killers) was a mercenary company based in Florida and seeking money to make covert attacks on Cuba during the Fidel Castro era. The original Interpen was active between its formation in 1961 and 1969 at the conclusion of the trial of Clay Shaw by District Attorney of New Orleans Jim Garrison.
The new incarnation of Interpen was created in 1980 as part of the CIA initiatives in various “communist” leaning nations. The intention was for Interpen to act as a protective force for commodity trading interests such as the Angola-American Friendship Platinum Mine, the Syrian Pipeline Project and the Seafloor Staging Naval Experimental base off the coast of California. The newer version of Interpen has employed various government sponsored super-powered “heroes” throughout its existence and despite repeated exposure in serious scandals.

MEDUSA
Medical Engineering Developments Utilizing Specialized Acquisitions
MEDUSA is a secret group of doctors, geneticists and animal handlers who scour the world and beyond looking for “novel” or “unique” genetic material. Once found, the genetic material is utilized in transgenic research to create living weapons of various kinds, usually of monstrous appearance. Although MEDUSA could use its technology on humans so far as is known they have preferred to use it on animal stock. One hallmark of a MEDUSA beast is that for some reason the MEDUSA geneticists keep adding an extra form of movement to their creatures – wings on a bear, gills and a shark tail on a giant wolf, and so on.

ODESSA
Organisation der ehemaligen SS-Angehörigen
“ODESSA” is an American codename (from the German: Organisation der ehemaligen SS-Angehörigen, meaning: Organization of Former SS Members) coined in 1946 to cover Nazi underground escape plans at the end of World War II by a group of SS officers with the aim of facilitating secret escape routes, and any directly ensuing arrangements. There is a known real Nazi organization known as Die Spinne which at one time was administered by Nazi luminaries including the daughter of Heinrich Himmler having originally been established during the end of World War 2 by Nazi super agent Otto Skorzeny. It is widely believed ODESSA is simply an American codename for the same organization. However, it is possible that ODESSA exists as a multi-generational “club” for National Socialist politically active families with a special focus on maintaining generational wealth through investments in German industry.

Terrestrial Reductionist United Taskforce on Healing
TRUTH is a committee of atheists running a small group of specialist agents tasked with exposing fraudsters in the medical profession and faith healing areas. They have a stated agenda of proving everything attributed to mysterious forces, new scientific breakthroughs, gods, spirits or aliens is in fact nothing more than misidentified existing cures, quackery, fakery or hoaxing. “Terrestrial” in TRUTH refers to the fact that what we see and experience on Earth – is all there is. Everything else is superstitious twaddle.

UNOPERA
“UNOPERA” or “U.N.O.P.E.R.A.” stands for the “United Nations Organized Paranormal Exploration and Research Agency”. It has an operational budget allocated from the Special Environmental Fund of the United Nations under a variety of cover programs. UNOPERA is administered and governed by the UNOPERA Committee, who meet in Geneva, Switzerland. UNOPERA head of military command was until fairly recently located in Southern England in the United Kingdom, close by the Saint Rushbrooke Boarding School where, coincidentally or not, many potential UNOPERAtives undergo training while school children. The military command has been relocated to a deep underground facility beneath 21st Century Focus / Epimethean Film Studios in Mercury, Nevada. Training of the child inductees is still primarily carried out at Saint Rushbrooke School.

This has led them into conflict with would-be world conquerors as well as Alien invaders from both outer space and other dimensions.
