FASERIP

VEHICLES

All Vehicles have four main attributes: Control, Speed, Body and Protection.

Control is the equivalent of Agility for a Vehicle and it is Control that is used to rate how well the Vehicle carries out a manoeuver that its Pilot or Driver (or Rider or Operator, etc.) has successfully rolled for it to do. For quickness of play the average of the character's adjusted Agility and the Vehicle's Control can be used - average the two Rank values and whatever number is the average is the new averaged Rank. A better way that reflects real life Pilot or Drive skill is for the character operating the vehicle to have to make a second adjusted roll when the Vehicle fails its Control roll, to keep the Vehicle under the character's Control. If the Vehicle Control roll fails badly, the Vehicle may CRASH.

Speed is simply the movement rate for a Vehicle (see "Speed" on pages 41-42 of the FASERIP RPG rulebook).

Body is the equivalent of the Health of the Vehicle. Damage to the Vehicle comes directly off of this score unless the Vehicle has the Armor (FASERIP RPG rulebook page 36) power or a protective Force Field, etc.

Protection is the amount of Armour that the solid structure of the Vehicle provides to someone sitting within it. There may also be a note as to Cover with a percentage for Vehicles that a character sits on or is partially exposed while using such as a motorcycle. The Cover percentage is the chance of the Protection of the Vehicle applying to any damage otherwise suffered by the character as opposed to the Vehicle.

Other features of the Vehicle will be noted below the main summary. Some Vehicles will have many other systems and features. If these are not listed they will be of one Rank less, minimum Average, than any listed systems. For example if a Vehicle is listed as having World Class communications its unlisted radar / sonar will be Great.

Whether Vehicles are unique or produced on a production line, or by magic spells, all Vehicles are Devices and at some point in the past have gone through the Prototype and Stunt process for invention ("Building Devices", FASERIP RPG, page 50). This means as in real life a suit of armor, a race car or a spaceship can be improved, by having more or better systems added to it as time goes on. It will cost a lot in terms of Karma but that is part of the point of the ten repeated step progression in FASERIP.

BUYING VEHICLES: Also of note is that the cost of items including Weapons in the FASERIP rulebook is given as a Rank, which is supposed to modify the Wealth roll to obtain them. On this website, weapons are noted as being availability in terms of Average, Rare or Luxury. Average items require a standard successful Wealth roll to obtain. Rare Weapons require a Silver roll to obtain; Luxury items require a Gold roll to obtain. Almost all the magical, superhero and bizarre technological Weapons are Luxury and the gamemaster can easily be justified in inflicting further RS penalties to obtain them. For example a Weapon with Cost of Luxury -3RS requires a Wealth roll with a Gold result having first applied a -3RS penalty to Wealth.

All Vehicles are quite expensive and are considered to have a minimum cost of Luxury Rank. To arrive at a price for a chosen Vehicle, consult its Ranks. The Highest Rank modifies the Wealth roll required by -1RS for each Rank above World Class it is, and a bonus of +1RS on the Wealth roll for each Rank BELOW World Class it is.

STEEDS: Steeds are living animals, not machines. Characters ride them or ride in carts (4 or more passengers, Great or World Class cargo capacity), wagons (large carts with up to Fantastic cargo capacity and with sides and either a cloth or wooden structure covering the cargo area), sleds (a chariot or cart with skis instead of wheels) or chariots (a two person capacity fast open cart). The Speed of Steeds is equal to the creature's Strength and Endurance averaged unless for some biological reason they move faster (specialized musculature, wings, etc.). Animals including Steeds are also listed separately on their own page.

MOLE MACHINES: a Mole Machine is an automobile or hovercar (or if the gamemaster and players can agree on it, any other kind of Vehicle) with a massive drill mechanism at its front end. This drill has Burrowing Power at Fantastic Rank. It can chew through dirt, earth, rock and sand, burrowing underground at Bad Speed. The basic Vehicle the drill is attached to is as per the listings below, but it is armored and sealed with pressurized air that can last for up to 30 days. Food and water will have to be provided by the users. All Mole Machines have a Wealth roll required to buy of Luxury -6RS.

CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY: Construction machinery includes bulldozers, caterpillar track cranes and diggers, drilling machines and road grading machines. They have one enormous tool or implement a small glass windowed cabin and the rest of the Vehicle is a mass of steel. They have Average Control, Bad Speed, Phenomenal Speed and Phenomenal Protection. Cost is Luxury -2RS.

AIRCRAFT

Earthly aircraft are vehicles able to fly by gaining support from the air. It counters the force of gravity by using either static lift or by using the dynamic lift of an airfoil, or in a few cases the downward thrust from jet engines or electrogravitic repulsion. Common examples of Earth aircraft include airplanes, helicopters, airships, gliders, paragliders, and hot air balloons. There are also fantasy aircraft.

Fantasy aircraft tend to be craft similar to sailing ships of Earth that float in the sky instead of sailing in water. Skyships are able to float in water as well as fly, but many of them can also touch down on land, or hover extremely close to the ground, but not move once they have done so.

Aircraft have a Range of Planetary. This is the maximum range an aircraft or other air Vehicle can travel before needing to refuel, get its floatation gas replenished or runs out of fuel for its exotic lifting body. Skyships have no real limit to their range since unless their magic fails they will float forever.

VTOL aircraft are Vertical Take Off and Landing meaning they need no or very little runway, a major advantage. All magical Skyships are automatically VTOL as are Airships, Helicopters and Hot Air Balloons, although none of these types of aircraft are normally referred to when VTOL is used as a term. Earthly VTOL aircraft have a *Star next to their name.

Each TYPE of aircraft requires a separate Speciality to operate, but Prop (propellor driven) and Jet Aircraft skills default to the next one down.

Prop Aircraft skills are:

  • Speciality: Single Engine Prop Aircraft
  • Speciality: Multiple Engine Prop Aircraft
  • Speciality: Heavy Multiple Engine Prop Aircraft (bombers, cargo planes and passenger planes)
This means that if a character has Speciality Heavy Multiple Engine Prop Aircraft he or she can also fly all other Prop Aircraft.

Jet Aircraft skills are:

  • Speciality: Single Engine Jet Aircraft
  • Talent: VTOL Pilot
  • Talent: Fighter Pilot
  • Speciality: Multiple Engine Jet Aircraft
  • Speciality: Heavy Multiple Engine Jet Aircraft (bombers, cargo planes and passenger planes)
This means that if a character has Speciality Heavy Multiple Engine Jet Aircraft he or she can also fly all other Jet Aircraft.

Albatross D.III Biplane

The Albatros D.III was a biplane fighter aircraft used by the Imperial German Army Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte) during World War I. A modified licence model was built by Oeffag for the Austro-Hungarian Air Service (Luftfahrtruppen). The D.III was flown by many top German aces, including Wilhelm Frankl, Erich Löwenhardt, Manfred von Richthofen, Karl Emil Schäfer, Ernst Udet, and Kurt Wolff, and Austro-Hungarians like Godwin von Brumowski. It was the preeminent fighter during the period of German aerial dominance known as "Bloody April" 1917.

Maximum speed was 110 miles per hour. The aircraft required a Pilot and could not carry passengers. It was armed with a specially fitted synchronized Schwarzlose machinegun.

Ceiling was 15,000 feet and it will stall above this.

Hot Air Balloon

A hot air balloon is a lighter-than-air aircraft consisting of a bag, called an envelope, which contains heated air. Suspended beneath is a gondola or wicker basket (in some long-distance or high-altitude balloons, a capsule), which carries passengers and a source of heat, in most cases an open flame caused by burning liquid propane. The heated air inside the envelope makes it buoyant, since it has a lower density than the colder air outside the envelope. As with all aircraft, hot air balloons cannot fly beyond the atmosphere. Up to five people can stand in its gondola, a lightweight basket hanging from the underside of the balloon. This gondola has the hot air generating device immediately above it, in reach of the craft's pilot.

Nieuport XB Biplane (Nieuport 10)

The Nieuport 10 (or Nieuport XB in contemporary sources) was a French First World War biplane that filled a wide variety of roles, including reconnaissance, fighter and trainer. Many of the early French aces flew the Nieuport 10, the best known of which was Georges Guynemer, who used several Nieuport 10s, all marked "Vieux Charles". Jan Olieslagers was flying a Nieuport 10 when he became the first Belgian to shoot down another aircraft, while the first Canadian aerial victory was also scored in a Nieuport 10, by Flight Sub-Lieutenant Arthur Ince.

Maximum speed was 80 miles per hour. The aircraft required a Pilot and could carry one other person in a rear seat. It was armed with either a Hitchkiss gun or a Lewis gun.

Zeppelin (airship)

A Zeppelin is a type of rigid airship named after the German inventor Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin who pioneered rigid airship development at the beginning of the 20th century.

The first Zeppelins had long cylindrical hulls with tapered ends and complex multi-plane fins. During World War I, following the lead of their rivals Schütte-Lanz Luftschiffbau, the design changed to the more familiar streamlined shape with cruciform tail surfaces, as used by almost all later airships. They were propelled by several engines, mounted in gondolas or engine cars, which were attached to the outside of the structural framework. Some of these could provide reverse thrust for manoeuvring while mooring.

A Zeppelin is 776 feet long and 100 feet in diameter. It requires a crew of 36 including officers. Its operating speed is 80 miles per hour.

Zeppelins have 20 sleeping berths for passengers. This can be doubled with bunk beds. On short trips it can take up to 50 people entertained in a lounge or on viewing mezzanine decks.

GIANT ROBOTS

Giant Robots aka Clambers, Wearpuppets, Strong Fighting Armor Exceptionals and Exo-Suits are essentially humanoid tanks or armored cars. Even the smallest is twice the height of a normal human and weighs roughly a ton. The largest are the size of Kaiju and indeed are often used to fight them. "Robot" is a misnomer here since few if any of these Vehicles can operate autonomously. As soon as their Pilot is out of action the Vehicle stops dead as well.

The smaller Giant Robots are worn like suits of armor. However any Giant Robot larger than twice human height and weighing more than three tons must be operated only by someone with Pilot Speciality, specifically Pilot (Giant Robot).

Giant Robots are usually marked out by their humanoid shape and their legs - walking instead of rolling on wheels or tracks. However Giant Robots can come in a huge range of shapes including four legged resembling a giant animal like a lion, armadillo or wolf, multi-legged like a crab or a centipede, or even stranger forms like a centaur or tankotaur. A tankotaur is a "centaur" with the lower body of a tank rather than a horse, meaning the Giant Robot tankotaur rolls on caterpillar tracks.

Giant Robots are sometimes used by law enforcement and not just military formations or secret organizations. Giant Robots offer some chance for non powered people to counter the activities of superbeings.

Wearpuppet MBT

Wearpuppet MBTs stand 24 feet tall and weigh 20 tons. They are humanoid, with a tank turret instead of a head. Their humanoid body has Great Fighting, Bad Agility, World Class Strength when functioning as a character rather than a Vehicle. The thick armor plating and military grade construction of the Vehicle make it very tough. The tank turret head contains 24 rounds of artillery type ammunition. One shot is possible every TWO rounds. The delay is due to reloading the turret and ejecting the spent shell from the previous shot.

Seishin Daimyo

Seishin Daimyo are enormous (200 feet tall, 1,000 ton) humanoid robots composed of six individual robots that act cooperatively until one part of the Seishin Daimyo is destroyed. The six robots are Left Leg, Right Leg, Body, Left Arm, Right Arm and Head. Each has its own Pilot with Head Pilot in overall command. When one of the robots is destroyed or damaged too badly to keep fighting the other Pilots can elect to keep acting as a damaged Seishin Daimyo or break back up into their component smaller Giant Robots, each of which is approximately 30 feet tall weighing 300 tons. The individual robots are, if not fleshed out more fully, to be considered Wearpuppet MBTs with Single Shift Body AND Single Shift armor. No two Seishin Daimyo are the same. Each has some style, flavor or oversized weapon (a random Power Gimmick). Some are stationed in or from a particular country or region and are designed so as to resemble the traditional national or regional costume. Some are designed to resemble humanoid versions of legendary World War 2 battleships, aircraft or tanks. Some have been enhanced by friendly Aliens and have resplendent extra armor, giant-sized weapons such as a giant samurai sword, or an outer armored surface resembling a Medieval knight.
In normal operation, the Head Pilot is piloting the entire combined robot. In the event they are incapacitated another Pilot takes over. All controls for the entire combined robot are duplicated in the cabin of each smaller robot.
Each of the six component robots of a Seishin Daimyo have a Sixter Drive Component. This is a space drive that when the robots combine to form the Seishin Daimyo enables the Seishin Daimyo to fly as if using the Air Control (Flight) Power with an air speed of World Class (30) and a speed in outer space of Stellar (3000).

  • Each of the component robots has an Emergency Activated Ejector System that can eject the Pilot in a small life boat in a single action, moving at Planetary speed for 10 seconds before a drogue chute opens and the life boat capsule drifts from orbit or down from whatever altitude it reached.

HOVERCARS

Hovercars are air cushion and turbojet vehicles which use directional jets to lift off and hover and an air cushion to ride on at ground level. For sustained high altitude flight the air cushion is shut off and the jets alone are used. Old fashioned hovercars have a literal cushion underneath their chassis, similar to a gigantic rubber pad or tire that inflates with compressed air and bounces gently off of the road surface or terrain. Modern hovercars simply have a constantly circulated region under the vehicle where strong downward fan blasts keep the vehicle floating similarly to the propellers on a drone.

A surprisingly large number of Refuges seem to make use of Hovercars, especially Hovercars equipped for radar and physical Stealth.

Delta Hovercraft

The Delta Hovercraft can carry two human sized characters with one using Drive Car to steer and operate the vehicle; can carry an extra 100 Ibs. cargo. Fuel tank capacity: 18 gallons, range 200 miles until empty. The Delta Hovercraft is an arrowhead shaped silvery metallic vehicle that floats a few inches off the ground even when idle, and can fly up to a ceiling of 20,000 feet in the air. The vehicle can seal itself airtight for pressurised flight but only contains enough air for two hours before requiring the craft to be opened again to replenish the atmosphere.

MOTORCYCLES

Motorcycles are defined here as two wheeled powered vehicles "driven" by a rider sitting on them using Drive (Motorcycle) skill. Hoverbikes, futuristic force field supported bikes and so on all come under this heading if the operating principle and general profile still fits.
A normal motorcycle provides 10% cover for the rider and the rider and the bike together provide 15% cover for any passenger hanging on behind the rider. No normal motorcycle can have more than one rider and one passenger unless it has a sidecar - a possible detachable one or two wheeled pod with a seat in it attached to one side of the motorcycle.

Operating on the same basic two wheel principle and of much older vintage, BICYCLES are two wheeled vehicles capable of only carrying a single rider. They are powered by the muscles of the rider and so move at one Rank less than the rider's Strength Rank. Bicycles, even the expensive pretentious ones, have the following statistics:

ROCKETS

A rocket is a projectile that is propelled forward when chemical compounds are combusted inside its engine to produce hot gases, which are blown at high speed through its nozzle, producing the thrust needed to propel the vehicle forward, allowing it to reach space, Earth orbit and beyond.

Rockets can be simple tubes of whatever size, be reusable aircraft that leave and enter the Earth's atmosphere, or large Vehicles built in Earth orbit that never enter an atmosphere but rocket between planets or other destinations and use smaller Vehicles to take people or cargo on the last step to the destination.

The fuel types used by rockets contain cryogenic elements which, it is said, can become unstable or dangerous if exposed to the direct heating from the unscreend solar radiation in space. For this reason spacefaring rockets are colored reflective white, or predominantly white. Another alternative is reflective metallic outer hulls for rockets.

To leave the Earth's atmosphere a rocket must either be flown by a Pilot or controlled from the ground by a character with Speciality Science (Rocketry) or Talent Rocket Scientist, or by a Pilot with controls with the equivalent of the ESP Power enabling them to "see" what the rocket is seeing and steer it accordingly. The skill for rocket Piloting is Pilot (Rockets). Rockets are different from most any other kind of Vehicle.

A rocket with a crew is a SPACECRAFT, or sometimes colloquially called a spaceship. A spacecraft without a crew is sometimes referred to as a space probe or a robot probe.

An orbital spaceflight is one where in which a spacecraft is placed on a trajectory where it could remain in space for at least one orbit. To do this around the Earth, it must be on a free trajectory which has an altitude at perigee (altitude at closest approach) of Triple Shift to Planetary (approximately 50 miles, which is between the ranges of TS (10 miles) and Pl (100 miles)). This 50 mile high mark is the official boundary of space as defined by NASA, the US Air Force and the FAA. To remain in orbit at this altitude requires an orbital speed of Planetary (17,550 miles per hour in this case). Orbital speed is slower for higher orbits, but attaining them requires greater more fuel and thrust (Silver or better Pilot or skill roll to achieve). The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale has established the Kármán line at an altitude of 62 miles as a working definition for the boundary between aeronautics and astronautics. In other words below 62 miles you are still considered to be flying an aircraft and above this distance you are flying a spacecraft. Of course if you are flying a Vehicle that can do more than lob into space once, such as a reusable spaceplane or space shuttle this is less important. This border used because at an altitude of about 62 miles, as Theodore von Kármán calculated, a vehicle would have to travel faster than orbital velocity to derive sufficient aerodynamic lift from the atmosphere to support itself, in other words the principles of heavier than air flight in atmosphere no longer apply to the Vehicle.

Ace Buckley's Time Ship

Ace Buckley built a spaceship that was capable of time travel and offered his friend Toni Stark the chance to travel back in time to observe a number of important battles and events. Inevitably, they were drawn into those events and interacted with a number of important historical figures, including Queen Elizabeth, Pocahontas, Blackbeard and King Richard, The Lionheart.

Toni and Ace usually hid their time ship underwater, and then swam ashore in bathing suits, often carrying any gear they think they might need. Once on land, they would assume the garb of the period they were visiting. They could return to the ship for supplies as needed. Though they had access to modern weapons, Ace insisted on using the weapons of the time, and he almost always found himself fighting in the battles he had come to witness.

STEEDS

Steeds can move for a day before needing rest. This is true for land, water and air creatures. If pulling a Vehicle (cart, wagon, chariot, sled) they can travel for half a day and then must make an Endurance roll. If this is successful they can keep moving for the rest of the day.

Steeds also need to be fed and watered once a day. Buying a WEEK's food is a normal Wealth roll for a character. A Steed that is in its natural environment can feed itself; but there is a 33% chance it won't find fresh water that it requires and will need its rider to find water for it or supply it with water from stores. The only exception to this is Steeds with a *Star next to its name; these are desert creatures or water creatures neither of which require extra water to be given to them.

Steeds have Health; they can be wounded or killed. If reduced to half Health or less they move at half Speed.

Steeds can wear Barding. This is Protection for them, exactly like armor for a Vehicle. Barding requires a Rare Wealth roll to purchase.

Control for a Steed is how wild spirited or defiant the creature is even though it is domesticated.

Steeds do NOT normally fight. Their Fighting Rank is Zero for all normal Steeds. The Reason of all normal Steeds is Terrible. The Intuition of all normal Steeds is Average. The Psyche of all normal Steeds is Bad. Where these statistics are different it is noted in the Notes.

The Nautilus, Captain Nemo's Atomic Submarine

A nuclear submarine is a submarine powered by a nuclear reactor, but not necessarily nuclear-armed. The Nautilus uses conventional small artillery mounted on its decks or stowed away ready to be deployed by its crew in a manner that would be familiar 50 years after its construction but for its time was utterly inconceivable except by the genius of Captain Nemo (and Jules Verne).

The large amount of power generated by a nuclear reactor allows nuclear submarines to operate at high speed for long periods, and the long interval between refuelings grants a range virtually unlimited, making the only limits on voyage times being imposed by such factors as the need to restock food or other consumables. The Nautilus remained submerged while traveling a distance of 20,000 Leagues.

THe Nautilus weigh 4,600 tons. It is 280 feet long and has a diameter of 40 feet. It requires a draft of 31 feet meaning they must be at least 31 feet off the sea floor at all times or have undergone an automatic crash unless Nemo or whoever is piloting the vessel makes a feat of Agility to allow the armored ramming serrations on the outer hull to smash through whatever sea floor obstruction - or the sea floor itself. If doing so then the damage from the serrations is still also inflicted on the Nautilus herself.

Maximum submerged depth is 5,000 feet. At that depth the Nautilus takes Great damage from pressure each full hour spent at the depth (this will not penetrate this Vehicle's Protection until that Protection has already been damaged or negated somehow). This damage is not inflicted until the Nautilus goes below 5,000 feet depth. The Nautilus can remain submerged for up to 80 days before needing to surface to replenish fresh air.

The Nautilus require 16 officers and 100 crew for proper functioning and operation and also has enough room for up to 16 passengers or Marines. With a full 16 extra people on board the submarine can only remain submerged for up to 60 days.

The Nautilus is pre-stressed and armored and has forward fitted serrations allowing it to deliberately ram a surface vessel, in effect turning the entire submarine into a giant torpedo. These serrations inflict Phenomenal intensity damage but only on large objects or characters such as ships, other submarines and Kaiju.

Maximum submerged depth is 2,000 feet. At that depth the Nuclear Submarine takes Great damage from pressure each full hour spent at the depth (this will not penetrate this Vehicle's Protection until that Protection has already been damaged or negated somehow). This damage is not inflicted until the Nuclear Submarine goes below 1500 feet depth. A Nuclear Submarine can remain submerged for up to 90 days before needing to surface to replenish fresh air.
