INVENTING A LIMITATION

Inventing a Limitation or weakness for another character or type of character is a special type of device. Inventing a Limitation permanently affects at least one other superhero (or supervillain) so this is a big deal.

Inventing a Limitation might involve discovering a new mineral or element, creating a specialized form of energy weapon, a powerful unique magic spell, and so on.

The standard invention rules (FASERIP RPG pages 50 to 51) still apply. However, once ten successful prototypes of the Limitation have been tested, the Limitation becomes permanent for the other character and creating it as a permanent “Device” instead of costing 100 Karma to make costs ALL the inventor’s Karma, much as if he or she had taken a life – because potentially – they have!

For example Professor Quagmyre keeps trying to find a way to weaken her sworn arch-enemy Puree Perfection. Quagmyre hits upon the idea of a type of mineral, Perfectonite, that robs the Pureeing Princess of her powers. Each time Professor Quagmyre creates a lump of Perfectonite as a prototype this will cost her 100 Karma. However after she has managed to refine ten lumps of Perfectonite she can perfect the process so as to always have a lump of Perfectonite on hand. The cost: all of her Karma, as she ponders the awesome power she now possesses to harm or kill Puree Princess – or any other native of the planet Knifeon with whom she comes into contact!
