THE MAN IN BLACK (Real Name Unknown)

A mysterious tall figure with a broad-brimmed low slouch hat but draped in a long black cloak which (at least on one outing) concealed a "skeleton-like frame of white grisly bone". What little can be seen of its face between cloak and hat is "a saturnine countenance, attenuated to a horrible degree - sunken cheeks, thin, protruding nose, and above all those deep-set, burning eyes." It has a deep voice and a "deep, cavernous mouth" with "white, glistening teeth". It seems to have the ability to leap out of a three story window fifty feet up, disappearing with only the sound of a loud clanking sound like something metallic against brick, and also to take off down a street with incredible speed and impossible silence as though "treading simply on empty air" with the wind blowing its cloak across its frame "as though the head were supported by no body at all".

Powers:
The Man in Black is an Undead Revenant (see FASERIPopedia, page 286). He was part of an organized crime gang in the 1880s before being murdered by "Number 10," a fellow member of the same gang. Rising from the dead as a Revenant, The Man in Black became not only a murderous revenge seeking Undead monster waging war on the gang that betrayed him, but a homicidal enemy of all crime and criminals. Since some of those on whom he wished to take revenge evaded his vengeance, the Lords and Judges of the Dead have so far decreed that The Man In Black will remain Undead - perhaps forever.

The Man In Black always uses twin .45 ACP pistols, which were quite futuristic when he first wielded them but are now of course "classics."

All of the Powers of The Man In Black are those of a Revenant. In addition he has some supernaturally boosted skills.

  • UNDEAD - see full description page 283 of FASERIPopedia - Undead are "living dead" or ghostly creatures that are definitely not alive but are not still and dead like a normal corpse or skeleton, or nonexistent like a hallucination. Undead exist between life and death and are imbued with necromancy (death magic) or negative energy. Undead once created exist in their horrifying form forever until destroyed. They “heal” in a manner similar to living creatures only in the case of undead they are supping on the ambient life energy of the planet to restore their physical forms or energy forms. Undead all have Immortality of a kind - unless they are slain with a silver weapon or by Magic or a Magic weapon they will Rise, gradually reforming or reawakening to their undead existence once more. Undead are NOT alive, so “killing” them does not cost a hero all their Karma.

    NOTES
    • A matched pair of ivory inlay handled stainless surgical steel finish "futuristic" automatic pistols, manufactured in 1888 anticipating developments not to be seen in public for another 23 years. These two firearms do not run out bullets, but after each has fired 22 times The Man In Black must make a feat of Psyche to "reload". He can do this at any time to "reset" them to 22 shots each.

      The Ghost Guns fade out of existence when more than one Area away from The Man In Black and reappear in their twin shoulder harness inside The Man In Black's cloak.

    Contacts: A network of crime victims now all pledged to aid The Man In Black as he casts his shadow across the human rats of the underworld...

    Limitations:
    Other than his Undead nature, The Man In Black has no real Limitations. A Revenant can move around day or night.

    Notes::
    It is implied in one story that the Man In Black is climbing with the aid of grappling hook and rope, however every other indication is that he is supernatural and the metallic clank noise could also be explained as the noise he made colliding with the fire escape before leaping over it.
